St George Island Sunrise Beach Trek

As the sun rises farther north or south in its yearly progression through the equinoxes, different areas of St George Island light up for the best for photography.

We’ll meet at a section of the island that will give us the best sunrise and trek (perhaps not far) east as we photograph the star-lit dome of twilight and dawn over the ocean. Then we’ll learn some techniques to capture the wildly saturated colors that can make a beach sunrise very special.

Then we’ll turn and trek with the sun at our backs, hoping for chances with in-season black skimmers and other shore birds in the golden light. Other targets may include close-working dolphin pods, hunting osprey, diving least, royal and Caspian terns.

And of course there are the surprises the beach always offers as the surf and tides give us glimpses of life from the deep blue sea cast in the light of the yellow sun.

The equipment requirements for this tour are very flexible. Recommended: tripod, wide angle from 20mm to 50mm; medium telephoto to 400mm.

Time: 3 hours
Cost: $200, one photographer, $375, two photographers.
