Terns in Flight

Terns are some of the strongest and most graceful masters of the air. Each spring, thousands of terns migrate thousands of miles to nest on the Forgotten Coast. All of the rookeries are protected by laws for very good reasons.

In this tour we’ll start early and photograph the sunrise on the working waterfront of Apalachicola.

After first light we’ll board the boat and head into the bay where we’ll photograph terns returning from hunting to feed their growing young. And you may be amazed by the “baby food”. Least Terns, Royal Terns, Gull-billed Terns, and the majestic Caspian Terns fly close and continuously with a startling variety of prey for their chicks.

This is flight photography at its up-close best and most exciting. You’ll get plenty of hands-on experience with the few simple, but critical, tips I’ll share about flight photography. Bring plenty of batteries and ‘film’ because the action is non-stop.

Besides the terns, targets may include black skimmers, brown pelicans, American oystercatchers, various gulls and osprey.

When the feed slows, and if there is time, we may cruise the bay looking for diving birds and dolphins. We will be in the boat for approximately four hours.

Recommended equipment: tripod and wide-angle for shooting sunrise. For hand-held flight photography a 400mm lens or equivalent with auto-focus will be required for best shots.

Time: 5 hours
Cost: $625, one photographer, $725, two photographers.
